My old smart TV is slow and losing apps — do I need a new TV?
Almost never. The panel of a ten-year-old Samsung or LG is usually fine; what aged is the computer inside it — Tizen and webOS stop receiving app updates, menus crawl, and one day Netflix says goodbye. The fix costs a fraction of a TV: an Android TV box in the HDMI port becomes the brain, the TV becomes a screen, and HDMI-CEC lets the box's remote switch the TV on and off and drive the volume — so the old remote goes in a drawer. Everything on this site then applies to the box: your launcher on HOME, no ads, and for a property, Hotel TV in every room.
Why this beats replacing the TV
- The box gets updates for years; the TV's built-in system was abandoned by its maker. You upgrade the $30–100 part, not the $500 one.
- One remote, on most TVs: HDMI-CEC lets the box's remote power the TV and change the volume. Samsung calls it Anynet+, LG calls it Simplink — switch it on once in the TV's settings.
- The slow Tizen/webOS home screen never appears again: the TV powers on into the HDMI input and the box's home screen — the one you chose — is what you see.
What to buy
Any Android TV or Google TV box this site covers: a Chromecast with Google TV or onn 4K at the cheap end, an Nvidia Shield at the comfortable end. If streaming quality matters, make sure the box is certified for HD streaming (Widevine L1) — the no-name boxes that are not will quietly play Netflix in SD. Then ten minutes with the free tool: debugging on, your launcher on HOME, done.
For a BnB or hotel: the box IS the guest TV
This is how old TVs in properties come back to life: the box runs Hotel TV, is linked to the room in the hoteltvapp.com dashboard, and owns itself — HOME pinned, settings behind your PIN, guests see your welcome screen on a TV that was "too old" yesterday. Installers and box sellers provision these in batches with the same free tool.
Honest limits
- The panel stays what it is: an HD TV stays HD. The box fixes slowness and missing apps, not resolution.
- CEC behaves differently across brands and years — on most TVs it just works after you enable Anynet+/Simplink; on some, volume or wake needs the TV remote once in a while.
- This page is about Android boxes. The TV's own Tizen/webOS apps are unaffected and unmanaged — the point is to stop depending on them.
